Death Sentence Santee Sioux Indians by Abraham Lincoln
On 06 December 1862 then American President Abraham Lincoln ordered the hanging of 39 Santee Sioux Indians.
The Lakota (Teton) are the westernmost Sioux, known for their Plains Indians (native American tribes) hunting and warrior culture. The Dakota War of 1862 also known as the Sioux/ Dakota Uprising, the Sioux Outbreak, the Dakota Conflict or Little Cows' War was an armed conflict between America and several eastern bands of Dakota collectively known as the Santee Sioux. During the war, Dakotas killed over 500 white settlers. 1000s fled. 100s of white men, women, and children were taken hostages. The war relocated the Santee Sioux to reservations in Nebraska and Dakota territory. Military Commission sentenced 303 Dakotas to death. Lincoln reviewed and approved death sentences for 39 only. All 39 were hanged unto death on 26 December 1862, the largest deaths on a single day.
