SOCRATES

  Socrates was born in Alopeke (spelt Alepece also), Athens, Greece. Alopeke was a district of the city of Athens. It was an area of the phyle tribal group, located outside the city of Athens. Socrates was an influential philosopher active in ancient Athens in the 5th Century B.C. He is famous for his 'Socratic method,' a dialectic method of inquiry whereby a series of questions is asked to establish a person's beliefs or knowledge. Socrates is also remembered for the manner of his death. On 15 February 399 B.C., he was convicted in Athens of corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens and of impiety (nonbelief in God). His pupils and associates Plato and Xenophon recorded his end in a series of written dialogues. Socrates was sentenced to death by hemlock poisoning. Ancient Greeks used poison hemlock, extracted from trees, to execute prisoners. It is very toxic to humans and livestock.   Rubbles of the German City Dresden after bombing during World War II Few Allied actions during World War II are as controversial or debated as the firebombing of Dresden, one of Germany's most beautiful cities, renowned for its rich artistic and architectural treasures. The bombardment began on February 13, 1945, lasting two more days. During that time more than 1,200 Allied aircraft dropped almost 4,000 tons of high explosive and incendiary devices on the German city, killing between 22,000 and 25,000 civilians and utterly destroying the city. Allied planners justified the bombing by claiming Dresden was an important rail transport and communications hub for the German war effort, though not all of these sites were targeted for bombing.  Given the high number of civilian casualties – estimates now ranging from 35,000 to 135,000 – and the relatively few strategic targets, some have called the bombing of Dresden a war crime.   Sue Coe was born on 21.2.1951 to a working-class family in Tamworth town, Staffordshire County, England. Later her family moved to Hersham suburban village of Greater London. There they lived near a slaughterhouse. Coe developed passion to stop cruelty to animals. After receiving her Master of Arts degree from the Royal College of Art she moved to New York City where she lived between 1972 and 2001. In America she became an influential cultural figure. Coe is a graphic artist and visual essayist. Her works are highly political, anti-war, anti-capitalist and anti-fascist.   Her commentary on political events and social injustice are published in newspapers, magazines and books.  In her social protest art, she depicted the rights struggles of women, children, queers, animals, refugees, horrors of factory, zoos, prisons and political dissidents.
