"Come As You Are" sculpture in Riksplan Square, outside the Sedish Parliament, Stockholm, Sweden
The "Come As You Are!" sculpture is on the Riksplan square, outside the Eastern Wing of the Swedish Parliament building in Stockholm, Sweden. Created by artist Astrid Göransson, it was erected on 15 June 2022 to commemorate the centenary of Swedish democracy (1921–2021), with a seminar discussing the artwork and its significance. The artwork, a collaboration between the Swedish Parliament and the Public Art Agency Sweden, honors the first five women elected to the Swedish Parliament in 1921: Kerstin Hesselgren, Elisabeth Tamm, Nelly Thüring, Bertha Wellin, and Agda Östlund. The sculpture consists of three parts: The Path: Mosaic paving stones leading from Riksplan to the Parliament steps, symbolizing a journey toward democracy. The Sculpture: A patinated bronze depiction of the five pioneering women, carried forward by two contemporary young women, representing the ongoing struggle for democracy and equality across generations. The Book 'Runder' (Rounds): A collaborative work with Parliament staff, including cleaners and security guards, documenting their daily contributions to the functioning of democracy through drawings and stories. The monument highlights the historic inclusion of women in Swedish politics and serves as a space for reflection on democratic challenges.
