Xi'an was a walled city. The Xi'an City Wall represents one of the oldest and best preserved Chinese city walls. It was started during the Ming Dynasty in 1370. The wall is 13.7 km in circumference, 12 meters high, and 15-18 meters thick at the base. There are two entrances from the North and South gates. The city is arranged along the city wall. This wall was one of the world's largest ancient military defensive systems.
