Canton Tower, also known as Guangzhou TV Tower, is at a height of 618 meters with 450 meters main body and 150 meters antenna. It is the tallest tower in China and the third tallest TV, and Radio transmitting tower globally. Located at Yuejiang West Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou, near the Pearl River (Zhujiang) facing Haixinsha Island. Designed by Dutch architects Mark Hemel and Barbara Kuit, the tower features a twisted, slender design inspired by the human hip joint. It is built to withstand 7.8 Richter magnitude earthquakes. Built by the Guangzhou New Television Tower Group, construction began in 2005 and was completed in 2010 for the 2010 Asian Games. It cost 2.22 billion yuan. It is named Canton Tower in 2010, reflecting the city’s historical European name.
