HOMESTEAD ACT OF AMERICA

Landless agriculturists in America, working in the fields. President Abraham Lincoln, on 20 May 1862, signed the Homestead Act which opened land to the landless family farmers of America.

Homestead means house site. The Homestead Act gave the head of a family, aged at least 21 years, 160 acres for farming for five years. (large field in comparison with India) He had to build a house on this landed property. The farmers could also opt to buy the 160 acres of land, after 6 months at a reasonable rate of 1.25 dollars an acre. Many farmers even before 5 years gave up the land which was taken back by the Government. Before the Civil War, similar acts were proposed in 1852, 1854, and 1859. But the powerful lobby (of the landlords) defeated them. Lincoln boldly passed this Act.
