Revolution in Mexico overthrew General, Dictator, and longtime President of Mexico Porfirio Diaz on 25 May 1911.
José de la Cruz Porfirio Díaz Mori ruled Mexico for over 10 years. He modernized the country's economy. But his authoritarian regime led to the Mexican Revolution. Díaz began his career as a soldier, fighting against French intervention in Mexico. He gained fame for his military skills and escaped French captivity twice. After the war, Díaz entered politics and became president in 1876. During his rule, Díaz encouraged foreign investment and industrial development in Mexico. He built railroads and improved infrastructure. His policies favored the wealthy and foreign interests. Ordinary Mexicans suffered. Díaz ruled by rewards for supporters and harsh treatment of opponents. He offered people a choice between "bread or bloodshed", meaning they could cooperate or face harsh punishments. His government suppressed dissent and manipulated elections. In 1908, Díaz told an American journalist that Mexico was ready for democracy. He ran for re-election in 1910. This election was widely fraudulent. Sparked the Mexican Revolution. Díaz was forced to resign and went into exile in France. There he died on 2.12.1915 at 84. He was born on 15.9.1830 in Oaxaca City, Oaxaca, State, Mexico.
