António de Oliveira Salazar was a Portuguese economist, politician, Prime Minister from 1932 to 1968, as dictator. Born in 1889 in Vimieiro, Portugal, he studied law and economics. Became a professor. He ruled by conservative, nationalist, Catholic values, with the motto of 'God, Fatherland, and Family'. Salazar came to power after the 1926 military coup. As finance minister in 1928, he stabilized the economy, achieved budget surpluses, and built gold reserves. In 1932, as Prime Minister, he established a corporatist, authoritarian New State. Imprisoned, assassinated opponents, and abolished other parties. Limited industrialization, controlled social and political life. The country was Western Europe’s poorest. Salazar was neutral in World War II. Aided the Allies. In the Spanish Civil War supported Franco. He was anti-communist. Opposing Paganism in fascism and Nazism, he distanced them. In 1968, he suffered a stroke. He was replaced by Marcelo Caetano. His aides pretended that he was in power till his death in 1970.
