CORAZON AQUINO THE FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES

Maria Corazon Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino, the 11th and the first woman president of the Philippines.

Corazon Aquino, called 'Cory,' named the 'Mother of the Philippines Democracy', was the first female president of the Philippines, from 1986 to 1992. She became prominent after the assassination of her husband, Senator Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr., in 1983, which sparked opposition to Ferdinand Marcos. A key figure in the People Power Revolution, she united opposition forces and led a nonviolent movement that toppled Marcos in 1986, ending his 20-year dictatorship. The Army supported her. As President, Aquino restored democratic institutions, released political prisoners, and introduced a new constitution in 1987. She faced challenges, including economic struggles, coup attempts, Communist insurgency, Islamist secession movements, and criticism for political inexperience. Despite this, she prioritised peace, peace talks with Communists and Islamists, agrarian reform, and rebuilding democratic norms. She stepped down in 1992 after one term, as per the constitution. Aquino, a devout Catholic, was born on 25.1.1933, in Tarlac, and died on 1.8.2009 at 76 with colon cancer.
