James Freeman Clarke was an author, theologian, social reformer, and activist. Bridged Christianity, Transcendentalism, and progressive causes. Born on 4.4.1810 in Hanover, New Hampshire to Samuel Clarke and Rebecca Parker Hull. Graduated from Harvard College. Became minister at the First Unitarian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, a slave state. Co-founded the Church of Disciples in Boston, a progressive congregation. Opposed slavery. Encouraged Civil War. Fought for Women's Rights. Advocated civil reforms. Emphasised spiritual friendship. Penned 1,000 articles, sermons, and 32 books. Clarke died on 8.6.1888 in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.
