Jorge Rafael Videla, former Argentine President and Dictator was sentenced to 50years of imprisonment on 5th July 2012, for abducting 400 babies of political prisoners
Jorge Rafael Videla Redondo was a dictatorial President of Argentina as the head of a military junta that overthrew Isabel Perón's government in 1976. The junta controlled the country until 1983. It was made up of three men: Videla, General Orlando Ramón Agosti, and Admiral Eduardo Emilio Massera. Videla and the junta waged a brutal campaign against left-leaning opposition, the so-called 'Dirty War', arresting thousands of people during their regime. The arrested were disappeared, murdered, tortured, or imprisoned. 30,000 were disappeared. Videla and the junta tried a free market economy, but they were only partly successful. The country was near economic collapse by the early 1980s. Videla resigned in 1981. Elections were conducted in 1983. Videla was sentenced for murder in 1985. He was pardoned in 1990. More charges, including the kidnapping of 400 babies born to political prisoners, were laid. He was sentenced to 50 years in 2012. He died at 87 in prison on 17.5.2013, serving a life sentence. Videla was born on 2.8.1925 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
