MUSSOLINI VOTED OUT OF POWER BY HIS OWN GRAND COUNCIL OF FASCISM
Mussolini, the fascist dictator of Italy, was voted out of power in a meeting in Rome on 24th July 1943 by his own Grand Council of Fascism. (Like Modi's RSS). Later, he was arrested.
Benito Mussolini was voted out of power in a dramatic meeting of the Grand Council of Fascism in Italy, on 24-25 July 1943. By mid-1943, the Allies landed in Sicily (Operation Husky, 10.7.1943). Italy’s military and economy deteriorated. Mussolini was questioned by the public and his own Fascist Party. The Grand Council of Fascism, the highest body of the Fascist regime, met on 24.7.1943, in Rome, for the first time since 1939, prompted by crises and internal dissent. Dino Grandi, a prominent Fascist leader, proposed a motion to remove Mussolini from power and restore authority to King Victor Emmanuel III. The motion called on the king to command the armed forces and end Mussolini’s dictatorship. After a heated debate, the Grand Council voted 19 to 8 in favor of the motion early on 25.7.1943. Mussolini met the King. The king informed him that he was being replaced by Marshal Pietro Badoglio as Prime Minister. Mussolini was arrested. His 21-year rule ended. The Fascist regime collapsed. Italy entered a period of political chaos. Badoglio’s govt secretly negotiated with the Allies, leading to the Armistice of Cassibile on 3.9.1943, which was announced on September 8. Mussolini was imprisoned. He was rescued by German forces in September 1943 (Operation Eiche) and installed as the head of the German-backed Italian Social Republic in northern Italy, a puppet state that lasted until 1945.
