"SCHOOLASTICIDE IN GAZA"
A school in Gaza was bombed and smashed by the Military of Israel. The future generations of Palestine are deprived of education by Scholasticide, in the brutal war by Israel
The term "scholasticide," coined by Palestinian scholar Karma Nabulsi in 2009, describes the systematic destruction of Palestinian educational systems by the Israeli military. It is applied to Gaza and the West Bank. All 12 universities in Gaza, including Al-Israa University, the Islamic University of Gaza, and Al-Azhar University, were reduced to rubble. 90% of schools (564 of 700), 188 of 288 UNRWA schools, and 285 of 448 public schools are destroyed. Libraries, archives, and cultural sites like the Gaza Municipal Library, Samir Mansour Bookshop, and the Omari Mosque’s library (with 14th Century texts) are targeted. 22 archives and libraries destroyed till January 2024. In Universities like Birzeit students and faculty are arrested. As of mid-2024, the Palestinian Ministry of Education and UN experts reported that 10,000 students, 500 teachers, and 111 university professors and staff were killed in Gaza. 16,700 students and 756 teachers were injured. Prominent academics like Sufyan Tayeh, president of the Islamic University, and Refaat Alareer (poet and professor) were killed. 625,000 school-aged children and 90,000 university students in Gaza are unable to attend classes. Students lost educational materials due to schools being used as shelters for 19 lakh displaced Gazans. Scholasticide had been since the 1948 Nakba. The high literacy rate (97% in Gaza and the West Bank) and historical emphasis on education make its destruction devastating. Data is incomplete due to ongoing conflict, communication blackouts, and restricted access for investigators.
