THE CARRINGTON EVENT
Image, of NASA Space Flight Center, of Carrington Event, the largest geomagnetic and intensely bright Solar Flare Storm in history on the First September 1859.
The Carrington Event occurred on Sept 1-2, 1859, was the most intense geomagnetic storm caused by a massive solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun. Named after British astronomer Richard Carrington, who observed the flare. It had profound effects on Earth's technological infrastructure. This CME travelled to Earth in 17.6 hours and was visible to the naked eye, and struck the Earth’s magnetosphere. The Global telegraph network and power transformers were severely damaged. The storm caused significant fluctuations in Earth’s magnetic field. It was a once-in-500-year event with a disturbance storm time index exceeding -850 nano Teslas. No equivalent event has occurred since.
