THE COMMUNIST CONTROL ACT OF THE USA
Dwight Eisenhower, the World War II General and American Republican President, signed the Communist Control Act on 24th August 1954, outlawing the Communist Party of the USA, at the height of McCarthyism. Modern Indian McCarthyism is practising the same tactics.
Communist Control Act, USA, was signed by President Dwight Eisenhower on 24.8.1954, outlawing the Communist Party of the US (CPUSA) and criminalized membership in or support for the party or Communist organizations. It was enacted due to fears of communist subversion. It declared the Communist Party was conspiring to overthrow the U.S. government. The Act cut the legal rights, privileges, and immunities of the CPUSA. Made its membership illegal with a penalty upto $10,000, five years imprisonment, or both. It was due to peak McCarthyism (throwing mud with lies) and anti-communist hysteria. Critics, the American Civil Liberties Union, argued it violated rights by denying legal protections to the CPUSA. The Opposition leaders, like J. Edgar Hoover, feared it would drive communists underground. Most provisions of the Act were later repealed or struck down as unconstitutional.
