Gripsholm Castle, in Mariefred village, 60 kms from Stockholm, Sweden, is a historic fortress and royal residence on Lake Mälaren. Built in the 1530s under King Gustav Vasa, it is one of Sweden’s best preserved Renaissance castles, known for the picturesque setting and red brick architecture. The castle houses the Swedish National Portrait Gallery, with 4,000 portraits, historic exhibitions, interiors, the 16th century Duke Charles’ Chamber and dungeon, where King Erik XIV was imprisoned in the 1570s. There is a deer park in the grounds. Now, Gripsholm is a museum managed by the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Royal Collections.
