WILLIAM GERALD GOLDING
Sir William Gerald Golding, a British novelist, playwright, poet, and teacher in English, Greek, philosophy, music, and drama, was born on 19th September 1911.
William Golding, Fellow of the Royal Society of literature, was born in Cornwall, England, on 19.9.1911. He studied at Oxford. Served in the Royal Navy in World War II. War experiences shaped his pessimistic view of humanity and society. Golding wrote 12 novels. Rites of Passage (1980) won the Booker Prize. His works delve into themes of human evil, survival, and moral decay. In 2008, The Times ranked him third among the 50 greatest British writers from 1945. Was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983. Was knighted in 1988. He married Ann Brookfield in 1939. They had 2 children. He was relying on alcohol and died of a heart attack on 19.6.1993.
