Skogskyrkogården, or Woodland Cemetery, Stockholm, Sweden, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its unique architecture and natural landscape. In the Gamla Enskede district, south of central Stockholm, it was designed by architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. Started in 1917 on a former gravel pit overgrown with pine trees, the cemetery was inaugurated in 1920. Unlike traditional cemeteries, it avoids rigid alignment, with meandering paths and graves nestled among pine trees, evoking a Nordic philosophy of life, death, and nature. Designed by Asplund, Woodland Chapel, without windows features light entering through a roof opening and a red limestone floor. Designed by Lewerentz, Chapel Resurrection resembles a neoclassical temple with a portico and a single window symbolizing a connection to heaven. There are three chapels—Faith, Hope, and Holy Cross—and a monument hall. It reflects Nordic Classicism and functionalism, with a gold statue by Carl Milles atop the structure. Designed by Johan Celsing, red brick structure, New Crematorium blends with the woodland and won the Kasper Sahlin Prize for architecture. In 250 acres, the cemetery features a 4-km granite wall, a meditation hill, and the Path of Seven Wells. The visitor center, with an exhibition, offers coffee, books, and postcards. 2,000 funerals occur annually.

  Phoenix Settlement   Tolstoy Farm   Mohanchand Karamchand Gandhi founded two ashrams for community living in South Africa. BLOODY OR RED SUNDAY OF RUSSIAN REVOLUTION

  By 1905, the aging Russian autocracy was in terminal decline. Strikes, unrest, and mutiny sprang up across the vast Russian landscape where, for centuries, people had been told that the Tsar was a saintly father figure; inviolable, all-powerful, and divinely appointed. Demonstrations led by Father Georgy Gapon in St. Petersburg on 22 January 1905 helped to shatter this illusion.  Fr. Gapon was a charismatic speaker and effective organizer who took an interest in the working  and lower classes  of the Russian cities.  Tsarist soldiers opened fire on protesters, killing 140 to 240 people and injuring 33 as per official figures.
