Bergen‑Belsen was a Nazi concentration camp started in 1940 as a prisoner‑of-war camp in the south of Bergen and Belsen villages, Germany. In this camp, people died from starvation, disease, crowding, and brutal conditions. By 1945, Bergen‑Belsen, built for 10,000, held 60,000 without food, water, or shelter. Tens of thousands died there during the war. 28,000 died after British forces liberated the camp on 15.4.1945. British troops discovered mass graves, piles of corpses, and severely emaciated survivors. Commandant Josef Kramer was the Beast of Belsen.
