CHILEAN INDEPENDENCE

José de San Martín, Argentine General, nicknamed the liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, fought the Battle of Maipu in the Chilean independence war along with Bernando O'Higgins, another Chilean independence leader of Irish ancestry, and won independence for Chile on 5th April 1818.

Revolutionary Leader José de San Martín of Argentina fought for the independence of South American countries from Spain. He was Lt col in the Spanish army. In 1812, he went to South America to support the independence movement in the United Provinces of Río de la Plata. In Mendoza, San Martín organized the Andes Army across the Andes Mountains in 1817. Won Chilean independence with victories at the battles of Chacabuco in 1817 and Maipú in 1818, leaving 2000 Spaniards and 1000 Chilean patriots dead. Then came to Peru. Led an expedition there in 1820 and in 1821 declared Peru independent. He served as the Protector of Peru and implemented progressive reforms. In 1822, he met Simón Bolívar in Guayaquil. Having differed with him in the mode of ruling, preferring Nations' independence to personal leadership, San Martín resigned as Protector of Peru and returned to Europe. Supported South American causes, offering his services in conflicts and political movements from afar. On 12.9.1812, San Martin (33) married Maria de los Remedios de Escalada in Argentina. Born on 25.2.1778 in Yapeyú, Argentina, San Martín died at 72 in France in 1850. In 1880, his remains were sent to Argentina, where he is remembered as national hero.
