In World War II, German forces began an offensive toward Stalingrad in Aug 1942, with intense fighting in Sep. Germans reached the city's outskirts with house-to-house combat, suffering heavy losses amid Soviet resistance. In Nov 1942, the Soviet counteroffensive (Operation Uranus) encircled the German Army. Intensely bombarded on 10 Jan 1943. Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus surrendered on Jan 31, defying Hitler's orders. Germans fully surrendered on Feb 2, 1943. 91,000 troops capitulated, exhausting supplies in the brutal winter.
