VIKTOR ORBAN, THE PRIME MINISTER OF HUNGARY
Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary. On 8th April 2018, the right-wing Fidesz-KDNP alliance won the election. Viktor Orban continued as Prime Minister.
Viktor Mihály Orbán was born in Székesfehérvár, Hungary, on 31.5.1963. After the fall of communism in Hungary, Orban was elected to parliament in 1990 and served as the P.M. from 10.5.1998 (to 2002) when his party formed a center-right coalition. Orban is a member of the conservative Fidesz party. He was re-elected as P.M. in 2010 and 2014. He took a hardline stance against immigration, particularly from Muslim countries. Orban became critical of the European Union and worked for Hungary's autonomy within the bloc. Orban is a divisive figure. His policies are criticised by human rights groups and international organizations. He is popular in Hungary, and his party has a strong majority in parliament. European Parliament says Hungary is not a democracy, Orbán’s govt is a “hybrid regime of electoral autocracy”. On 3.4.2025, Hungary withdrew from the International Criminal Court after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted under an ICC arrest warrant, arrived in Hungary.
