DICTATOR AND PRESIDENT OF GUATEMALA FLED

In a military coup in Guatemala, on 23 March 1982, under General Efrain Ríos Montt, the then-President Romeo Lucas fled Guatemala. Montt declared himself the President of Guatemala on 09 June 1982. On 8th August 1983, in another military coup, Montt fled Guatemala.

Dictator and President of Guatemala from 1982 to 1983, for 17 months, José Efraín Ríos Montt was guilty of committing genocide and crimes against humanity and against Guatemala's indigenous Mayan population. His conviction for these crimes in 2013 was the first time a former head of state was prosecuted for genocide in a national, as opposed to an international, court. His 80-year sentence was soon overturned. His 2015 retrial was ongoing at the time of his death due to a heart attack on 1.4.2018, aged 91. He was born on 16.6.1926 in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Elsewhere, the genociders and dictators are neither prosecuted nor dethroned, even after 12 years.
